Delgosha Garden is located in the in a mountainous bed next to the aqueduct called Mariz Saadi and is located in the area of a castle called Khandaj. Delgosha Garden is one of the historical gardens of Shiraz, which is located near Saadi’s tomb. The history of development and prosperity of Delgosha Garden is attributed to the pre-Islamic period and the Sassanid period. Delgosha Garden was also one of the most important and recreational gardens in Shiraz during the Safavid period.
So that in the pictures left by European tourists, Delgosha Garden has been mentioned a lot. This garden, which has an area of 7.5 hectares, is now one of the most spectacular promenades in Shiraz. Delgosha Garden was also very famous in the Safavid period and was still inhabited in the Afshari period. Delgosha Garden suffered a lot of damage during the period of Nader Shah to the Zandieh dynasty, which was revived during the reign of Karim Khan Zand.
Delgosha Garden has a beautiful mansion, in front of which there is a large stone pool. The building of Delgosha Garden is a hall with four royal residences in the style of Sassanid palaces of Bishapour, which has three floors and a porch with two columns. History of Delgosha Garden
The history of the development of Delgosha Garden dates back to pre-Islamic times and the Sassanid era. Delgosha Garden was located near Kahandej, which dates back to the Achaemenid and Sassanid periods. Delgosha Garden was one of the most important and recreational gardens during the Safavid period and has been seen in the photos of European tourists. When Timur Gurakani visited Delgosha Garden, he ordered the construction of a garden with the same name in Samarkand.
As we mwntioned, Delgosha Garden was also prosperous during the Afshari period; Its worst situation is related to the period between the reign of Nader Shah Afshar and the beginning of the Zandi dynasty, which suffered a lot of damage and, of course, was revived during the reign of Karim Khan Zand. Some of the buildings in Delgosha Garden belong to the Qajar period. During the Qajar period, the late Haji Ibrahim Etemad al-Dawla Shirazi once again established Delgosha Garden, but this development did not last long and after his death, the garden was destroyed again.
Years later, Delgosha Garden was purchased by the late Nawab Reza Gholi Mirza in 1918 and restored again. He built the pergola mansion (usually a round lozenge or octagon with doors or windows around the open space) in the middle of Delgosha Garden, and after him the garden was abandoned again until 1947 when the late Haji Mirza Ali Akbar Qawam al-Mulk built a fence around it and restored the mansion of Delgosha Garden, adding the current porch and columns to the building. After him, his son Mirza Fath Ali Khan built a bath on the east side of Delgosha Garden. Until half a century ago, Delgosha Garden belonged to “Khorshid Kolah Leqa al-Dawla”, the daughter of Ghavam al-Muluk, and today this garden is owned by the government and is one of the most visited tourist places in Shiraz.
Architecture
The Persian Garden has a unique structure and design, it is located in the path of water, it is surrounded by high walls and it is located inside the garden of the summer mansion and the water pool. These three characteristics distinguish Iranian gardens. In fact, European tourists, after observing Iranian gardens, described them with the characteristic and name of “Persian Garden”. The area of Delgosha Garden is 7.5 hectares and the trees of which are mostly citrus trees, which in May, its beautiful flowers and pleasant aroma make the garden very pleasant. The mansion in the middle of Delgosha Garden, is built in the style of the Sassanid palaces of Bishapour in the Zandieh period. This three-storey mansion has two entrance doors on both sides of the building and includes a large hall with four royal residences. The mansion of Delgosha Garden has a large porch with two columns on the middle floor that faces the pool and around it the poems of Shurideh (poet of the Safavid era) written in Nastaliq script.
Wooden ceilings with beautiful beds along with mirrors and oil paintings also add to the beauty of this mansion in Delgosha Garden. In front of the mansion of Delgosha Garden, there is a large stone pool and many waterfalls on each side that will attract your attention. The water of Delgosha Garden is also supplied from the water that flows from the aqueduct spring of Saadi’s tomb. The mansion is now strong and stable, but has been destroyed and even burned several times during different periods.
