History of Narenjestan Ghavam
Before talking about the history of Narenjestan Ghavam garden it is better to get familiar with Ghavam family. So, who was the Ghavam family? The Ghavam family was an influential and powerful family during the Qajar period that ruled Fars Province and its environs for several centuries. Ghavam family was the children of Haj Ibrahim Khan and lived in the “Bala Kaft” neighborhood of Shiraz. Many sights of Shiraz have been built or reconstructed by this family, including the following: Hosseinieh Ghavam, Afifabad Garden, Delgosha Garden, Kalantar Garden, Bigler Beigi Garden, Zinta Al-Mulk House and Narenjestan Ghavam.
The construction of Narenjestan Ghavam garden is related to the years 1257 to 1267 AD, and over time, other buildings were added to this garden. Arts such as mirror work and plastering were the last steps used in the construction of Narenjestan Ghavam and were finally completed in 1298. The garden and mansion of Narenjestan Ghavam were called “outer mansion” and had administrative uses during the reign of Mohammad Reza Khan Ghavam-ol-Molk III. Inside the mansion of Narenjestan Ghavam, political, military, and meetings with representatives of foreign governments were held.
The house where the Ghavam family lived was called the “inner house ” or Zinta Al-Mulk House. were connected by an underground tunnel. Ebrahim Ghavam made changes in the Narenjestan Ghavam Garden and in 1345 Khorshidi donated it to Shiraz University for artistic and cultural activities. This valuable garden was donated to the Asian Institute of Pahlavi University (Shiraz). Shiraz University gave this garden to the Asian Institute between 1969 and 1979 under the supervision of Arthur Abraham Pope, a famous American Iran ologist. After the revolution, at the same time as the imposed war, war-torn families settled in the building of Narenjestan Ghavam, and of course, this also caused damage to this structure.
Architecture
The area of Narenjestan Ghavam is about 3500 square meters and the buildings of this historical complex are located on the north and south sides with a total area of about 940 square meters. There are also other famous and historical buildings that are part of the Narenjestan Ghavam garden, such as: Ghavam Hosseiniyah, Gachineh Bath, Ghavam School (known as the House of Iraqis), Ghavam Interior (known as the House of Zinat al-Muluk), Ghavam Court (Naranjestan) and Ghavam bath, which have a special attraction for tourists.
