About Quran Gate

The Quran Gate may not be as important as other attractions in Shiraz such as Pasargadae, Persepolis, Tomb of Hafez and so on but, in fact, visiting the Quran Gate is necessary because it is one of the most prominent symbols of Shiraz. In addition, the tomb of the famous 13th century Persian poet, Khajo Kermani, is located near the Quran Gate. A beautiful park has been designed around Quran Gate where you can spend your free time with ice cream and Shirazi faloodeh.

The beautiful lighting of Quran Gate makes it even more spectacular. In ancient times, people knew the entrances of any city with its gates. In ancient times Shiraz had seven gates or entrances, and on one of its entrances, the road that connects Isfahan to Marvdasht and Firoozabad, there is a gate called the Quran Gate. Quran Gate is the only gate of Shiraz that has survived to this day. Amir Azdoldoleh Dailami ordered the construction of Quran Gate.

By the order of the Amir, the Quran was placed at the top of this gate so that the travelers could be in the protection of Quran. An interesting custom of the people at that time was that people would cross Quran Gate on the first day of each month and enter their city to be in the shadow of the Quran until the end of the month. Quran Gate is built in the middle of Baba Koohi mountains and forty places and on a gorge called Allah Akbar gorge. As Quran is placed on top of this gate, it is called Quran Gate; However, in the past it was also called Quran arch. This building was registered in 1996 with the number 1800 in the list of national monuments.

History of Quran Gate

History of Quran Gate

In Allah Akbar gorge, at the narrow entrance a high arch was built during the reign of Diyalameh. Quran Gate has been destroyed several times throughout history and has been rebuilt by the help of people. During each reconstruction, part of Quran Gate was reduced and other part was added to it.Karim Khan Zand restored the gate, which was going to be destroyed. On each side, he built arches for the guards and officers to leave, and built a small room on top of the arch.

Karim Khan placed a large handwritten Quran on top of the gate so that travelers could be safe from the effects of accidents and reach their destination safely by the blessing of passing under the Holy Quran; Hence it was called the Quran Gate. Unfortunately, in 1316, with the arrival of cars and trucks in the cities, the passage of vehicles to the city of Shiraz became difficult and the mayor of Shiraz ordered the demolition of Quran Gate. In 1327, with the help of Hossein Igar Etemad-ol-Tajjar, the Quran Gate was rebuilt and a Quran was placed on top of it and it became known as the Quran Gate. In the following years, the Quran, which was located on the top of the gate, transferred to the Pars Museum, and with the development of the Shiraz-Tehran Road, the Quran Gate was located on the west side of this road.

Architecture of Quran Gate

Islamic architecture can be seen in most of the attractions of Iran. The buildings that built in this style of architecture are often shared in domed arches and tall minarets. We mentioned that Quran Gate was rebuilt in 1327. This means that only Qajar architecture can be seen in today’s building and there is no news of Zandi or older architecture.

Like many gates of Iran, the Quran Gate of Shiraz has a prominent arch which is decorated with some verses of the Quran. The Quran is kept in a small room above the gate with delicate latticework on its windows. There are also colored tiles on the structure of the gate that make it really eye-catching. This gate is also decorated with lights at night and multiplies its beauty. Features of the new building of Quran Gate includes a rectangular room at the top for the Quran, larger gates with sharp arched openings, and two small entrances on either side of Quran Gate.

Around the structure, verses from the Holy Quran are written in Naskh and Sols scripts. On the body of Quran Gate, a number of verses of God can be seen. Above the gate, towards the city, verse 88 of Surah Esra of Quran, towards the outside of the gate, verse 9 of Surah Esra and in the western part of verse 9 of Surah Al-Hijr is written. Etemad ol-Tajjar has built a part for his death in Quran Gate. The tomb of Etemad ol-Tajjar is a small room on the left of Quran Gate that was close to the valley.
